International Department
International Department
The NABU International Department is responsible for implementing projects in our international focus areas of Africa, the Caucasus and Central Asia.
The International Department is located at NABU Headquarters in Berlin. Thomas Tennhardt is Head of International Department since January 2010.
Our work combines environmental and social concepts and ranges from species conservation, habitat protection, and establishment of protected areas, ecotourism and environmental education right through to capacity building, nature conservation as a means of crisis prevention, fighting poverty and the strengthening of civil society. We also actively support international conventions and programmes such as the Convention on Biological Diversity, the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Convention, the Ramsar Convention and the UNESCO Man and Biosphere Programme.
We involve interns, trainees and students writing their theses in our projects to give them an introduction in international nature conservation and for their own professional development. Each year we take on a participant from the Freiwilligen Ökologischen Jahres programme (a gap year taken to do voluntary work in the environmental sector) to work in the International Department. The International Department also works in close partnership with the ASA Programme and integrates young people in the project areas to carry out project work.
